Summer rainstorms frequently cause flash flooding in the northern areas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After decades of persistent problems, the city’s water authority has finally planned a coordinated series of works to mitigate this hazard definitively. One of the most critical areas is the Mangue district, home to the Maracanã stadium, which is drained by five rivers.
This webinar details the geotechnical design of three deep water reservoirs, situated within constrained urban spaces in Rio de Janeiro. The design specifications mandated that the earth be supported by 80 cm thick diaphragm walls, with no use of external ground anchors beyond the excavation perimeter, which was surrounded by buildings. The design was subsequently developed using Plaxis 3D analysis, based on a comprehensive site investigation.
